In India, the sector of agricultural development contributes substantially to the country's GDP and employs nearly 60% of its total workforce.

With so many people relying on agriculture as their primary livelihood, it’s no surprise that there are quite a few Indian companies whose sole focus is to aid in this sector of the country’s development, as well as in the markets abroad.

Here are 10 of the most prominent agricultural companies in India today, listed by their name and with a summary of what they do.

 

1) DuPont India

A massive conglomerate, DuPont is involved in every facet of India's agricultural sector. The company, which was founded in Delaware (hence DuPont) in 1802, is present across several agricultural sub-sectors – from producing crop protection products and seeds to providing animal feed supplements and fertilizers.

Although it’s not particularly well known outside India, within its home country DuPont is a giant; between 2008 and 2014 it was ranked by revenue as one of India’s 50 biggest companies. (Only one other agricultural business ranked higher).

 

2) Rallies India Limited

Rallies India Limited (RIL) is an Indian agri-business company involved in several projects. Headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, India, Rallies has operations spread across several states including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

The firm exports goods across 16 countries and products range from cotton to chemicals to animal feed. In recent years, Rallies has created subsidiary entities focusing on organic farming and palm oil.

Moreover, it also owns several buildings that can be used as abattoirs or cattle markets. Overall, Rallies is one of India's leading agricultural firms with operations in multiple sectors such as agriculture inputs, agriculture services, and agriculture trade.

 

3) Nuziveedu Seeds Limited

Nuziveedu Seeds Limited is an Indian agricultural company, headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana. The Company develops and markets seeds for various crops including rice, pulses, and oilseeds.

It also provides customized seed production solutions to its customers globally. The Company is a subsidiary of Bharat Seeds Ltd., an integrated crop-oriented company with a seed business as its mainstay.

Nuziveedu has emerged as one of India's leading seed producers during these years and it is now planning to expand its operation into African countries like Mozambique, Botswana, and Angola by setting up agri-business hubs on their soil.

 

4) Lemken India Agro Equipment’s Private Limited

Lemken India manufactures a wide range of tractors, post hole diggers, potato harvesters, and sprayers.

One of its most popular products is an earthworm cultivator that's used to cultivate and fertilize the soil for increased yields.

The company also sells field-drip irrigation systems and other implements to grow vegetables. While Lemken India is a subsidiary of Lemken AG & Co. KG, it uses a unique pricing structure for its products in India, allowing customers to pay only for items they use; all equipment has a predetermined shelf life.

Instead of selling their farm machinery through dealerships, as most agricultural companies do in India, Lemken trains farmers on how to properly use their equipment as well as maintain it with periodic inspections by factory technicians.

 

5) Advanta Limited

Advanta Limited is an Indian Agriculture Company incorporated in India in 1988. The Company is mainly involved in the cultivation and processing of different crops including paddy, jute, sugarcane, cotton, and soybean.

The company also deals with biotechnology research which involves genetic engineering of plants for desired traits.

It uses biotechnology to modify seed properties such as protection against pests and virus infection, tolerance to herbicides, or tolerance to drought.

Its seeds are used in planting various food crops like rice, wheat, and mustard among others.

 

6) Monsanto India

Headquartered in Mumbai, Monsanto India is an agricultural company that provides herbicides, pesticides, and other products to farmers around India.

It's one of the oldest agribusiness companies in India, having been established in 1963. It employs more than 2,000 employees and operates 18 distribution centers nationwide.

The company has a network of more than 2,000 dealers and agents as well as scientific laboratories across 29 states.

Its main products include seeds, crop protection products, and information technology solutions.

It generates revenue through various business segments including Seeds & Traits (51 percent), Agricultural Inputs (29 percent), and Crop Protection (20 percent).

 

 

7) Poabs Organic Estates

Poabs Organic Estates Pvt. Ltd. is an agriculture company based in India that supplies fruits and vegetables to grocery stores and restaurants throughout Kerala, one of India’s smallest states, located on the southwest coast of India.

The company was founded in 2008 by Nandakumar Velayudhan as a family business, based on his organic farm established in 1991.

Their first crop was coconuts but they expanded their products over time to include mangoes, lemons, bananas, guavas, and jackfruit.

They now grow 90 varieties of vegetables and 30 varieties of fruit on 5 acres (2 hectares) of land at Kaduthuruthy.

 

8) National Agro-Industry

The organization was formed as a public sector undertaking in 1971 and has since grown into one of India’s largest agricultural companies.

It specializes in agro-based industrial products, including seeds, animal feed, pesticides, and machinery.

The company strives to meet its customers’ needs through technology research and development. It also maintains a subsidiary cooperative society to provide a platform for selling its goods to farmers.

Agro Industries primarily operates within India, with some subsidiaries located throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America.

 

9) Godrej Agrovet Limited

Godrej Agrovet Limited, or Godrej Agrovet for short, is an Indian agricultural and agri-business company.

The company was started in 1981 with a focus on crop development and has since expanded to produce seeds, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and organic inputs.

Its division named Godrej International is a leading supplier of liquid fertilizers to Southeast Asia countries including India.

Over its 36 years of operation, Godrej Agrovet has become one of India’s largest companies in farm supplies and chemicals.

The company also exports products worldwide. In 2016, Godrej Agrovet partnered with agriculture giant Cargill to form Crop Care Alliance LLC as part of its plans to expand in developing countries outside India.

Rasi Seeds is among India’s top five Agri-companies, with an annual turnover of Rs. 1500 crore. It is a joint venture between Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Iyer Group and JSW Holdings Ltd.
